Science-backed guides to help you understand functional mushrooms, make informed decisions, and get the most from your supplements.
Interactions & Safety Guide
Functional mushrooms have an excellent safety profile backed by thousands of years of traditional use and decades of modern clinical research. However, like any bioactive supplement, there are important considerations for certain populations and medications.
General Safety Profile
The five mushrooms in the Ancient Myco line — Lion's Mane, Chaga, Reishi, Cordyceps, and Turkey Tail — have all been studied in human clinical trials and are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) at recommended doses. Adverse events in clinical research have been rare and typically mild (digestive discomfort, skin sensitivity).
The most common side effects reported — and they are uncommon — are mild digestive changes during the first 1-2 weeks as the body adjusts. These typically resolve on their own.
Medication Interactions
Reishi and Chaga have mild antiplatelet and anticoagulant properties that may enhance the effects of blood-thinning medications, potentially increasing bleeding risk. If you take warfarin or other anticoagulants, consult your healthcare provider and monitor INR levels when starting supplementation.
Several functional mushrooms have demonstrated blood sugar lowering effects in research. If you take diabetes medications, adding mushroom supplements may enhance this effect and require dose adjustments. Monitor blood glucose more frequently when starting and consult your provider.
Functional mushrooms modulate immune system activity. If you take immunosuppressant medications (commonly prescribed after organ transplant or for autoimmune conditions), mushroom supplements could potentially interfere with their immunosuppressive effects. Do not combine without explicit guidance from your transplant team or specialist.
Reishi has been studied for its potential to support healthy blood pressure. If you take antihypertensive medications, combining with Reishi could theoretically enhance blood pressure lowering effects. Monitor your blood pressure when starting and adjust with your provider if needed.
Turkey Tail (PSK) is actually approved as a cancer adjunct therapy in Japan and is used alongside conventional treatment. However, always inform your oncologist about any supplements during cancer treatment. Some chemotherapy regimens may interact with immune-modulating supplements.
Turkey Tail is actually recommended after antibiotic courses. Antibiotics indiscriminately kill both harmful and beneficial gut bacteria. Turkey Tail acts as a potent prebiotic that helps restore beneficial bacteria populations. Starting Turkey Tail immediately post-antibiotics is actively beneficial.
Special Populations
Consult your healthcare provider before use. While functional mushrooms have an excellent general safety profile, clinical research specifically on pregnancy and lactation is limited. We recommend medical guidance before starting any supplement during pregnancy.
Functional mushrooms are not generally recommended for children under 18 without medical supervision. The clinical research establishing safety and dosing has been conducted primarily in adults. Consult a pediatric healthcare provider if considering mushroom supplements for a child.
If you have a known allergy to culinary mushrooms (such as button mushrooms or shiitake), you may react to functional mushroom supplements as well. Start with a very small amount and monitor for allergic symptoms. Consult an allergist if you have a history of severe mushroom reactions.
Functional mushrooms are immune modulators — they can both stimulate and regulate immune activity. For most autoimmune conditions, this modulatory effect is actually beneficial. However, those on immunosuppressant medications for autoimmune disease should consult their specialist before use.
Due to the mild antiplatelet effects of Reishi and Chaga, it is generally recommended to stop these supplements 1-2 weeks before any scheduled surgery. Inform your surgical team about all supplements you take.
